Hike June 30, 2004 Catherine Pass, then to
Sunset Peak (via Little Cottonwood
Canyon)
Weather: Clear Sky, some
clouds,
making for some dramatic lighting.
Present were: Mike, K7DOU and
friend Nancy; Gordon, K7HFV; Clint, KA7OEI; Bruce, KI7OM; Randy, KG7GI;
Randy, N7BRP
Destination: Catherine Pass
- then to Sunset Peak as time (and lungs) permitted.
Comments: Everyone got to
Sunset
Peak... eventually. Mosquitos were noted only at Catherine
Pass. On the way down, we stopped at/near Catherine Pass to
observe
the moonrise.
Question of the day: "Are those
the Uintas over there? Which one is Baldy?" (Answer:
'Dunno - but the bearings of 80 and 83 degrees true would tend to
indicate
that the group visible was, in fact, the group containing Bald,
Agassiz,
Watson, Reide, and Notch. The masses farther south were likely
the
Grandaddy group.) Total distance: Just over 3.9
miles.
Times: Depart vehicle:

Pass:

Note: Those images with an
"r"
suffix have been re-adjusted to correct color/brightness issues.
To see the original version, remove the "r" from the URL.
If you want one (or more) of
these
images
and wish some sort of adjustment (color, brightness, exposure, etc.)
please
let me know: All of these image have been processed in some way.
These images are 300k-1000k in
size,
.JPG
and are in chronological order.
A few of the images were "exposed
for
highlights"
- but were overcompensated. They may have some noise in the
darker
parts visible after they were brightness-adjusted.
No-one ever said that all of
these
images
(or any of them) were good. Some of them have definite
focus/exposure
"issues."
EXIF data is present for most of
the
images,
showing time, date, and precise exposure conditions. Recent
versions
of Irfanview will show this in
the "View->Image Information->EXIF" tab.
Unless noted, all images taken
using
a Sigma
SD-10 camera using the 18-50mm zoom lens. (Some were taken with
the
55-200 zoom lens.)
For several of the images, a
polarizer was
used to enhance sky/cloud contrast (e.g. #'s 816-833)
Several of the images (e.g. #'s
824,
826,
831, etc.) with strong background content are slightly
out-of-focus.
This is because a long telephoto was used with a very small aperture to
maximize the focus of both the foreground (the person) and the
background
(the mountain.) With this very small aperture (f22-f32) the
depth-of-field
is maximized, but overall image sharpness suffers due to
diffraction.
Additionally, such a small aperture requires a long exposure (1/2
second
or so) when used with a polarizer: Any movement of the camera or
subject results in loss of sharpness.
