(Possibly)
Outstanding
Wednesday Night Hike Pictures
This is a collection of pictures
from past Wednesday Night Hikes that, for some reason, may (or may not
be) memorable. In some cases, the picture itself may not be
memorable, but rather, the story behind it.
I'll let you decide why they may
(or may not) be deserving of such recognition.
IMG01143
- On
the
peak - about 8 minutes before "official" sunset. A view of the
moon,
Heber valley, and the register box on the peak. Similar is #1142. (July 28, 2004
- Clayton Peak)
IMG01171
- A
sign
at Twin Lakes Pass warning that "you" are responsible for your own
actions
once you pass this point. (Does this mean that, up to this
point,
"you" are not responsible? If not, who is?) (August 4, 2004
- Twin Lakes/Lake Solitude loop)
SPARKS1b
- A
composite
of three successful attempts at capturing the "Sparking Rocks" on
camera.
If you take two rocks in the Cecret Lake area and bang them together,
you
can get sparks! These pictures were taken using the "bulb"
setting
while Bruce hurled rocks onto the ground. (August 11,
2004 - Cecret Lake/Sugarloaf Peak)
IMG01331
-
Often
heard but seldom seen: The American Pika. Similar are
#'s 1329
and 1330. Perhaps
not obvious at
first,
but the Pika is not a rodent per se, but a fairly close
relative
to the rabbit, being in the order lagomorpha. As one
observes
their behavior and movement, one begins to see obvious similarities
between
them and their lapine cousins - the obvious exception being that Pikas
make (distinctive!) noises. For more info on the Pika, read
about
them on the Utah
DWR
Site. (September
1,
2004 - Cardiff Pass)
IMG01511
-
Looking
across the sunlit meadow, across the canyon, toward Flagstaff
Mountain.
The peak and surroundings are illuminated by reflection from the clouds
above it. See also #1513.(September 22,
2004 - Willow Heights)
IMG02568
- For 10 minutes or so, the refraction of the atmosphere was such that
a pillar of sunlight appeared below the sun itself, extending to the
visible
horizon as shown in this picture. (July 6, 2005 -
Grandeur Peak)
IMG02736
- The entire group: Tina, Brett, Gordon, Ron, Mike and Clint. #2737
shows another attempt at taking a group picture - but several of the
group
(can you guess who?) began waving and dancing as soon as the camera's
shutter
opened for the 1-second exposure. (August 10,
2005 - Prince of Wales Mine)
IMG03546
- The obligatory group picture with the mountains in the
background. L->R: Clint, Randy, Mike, Ron, Gordon and
Bruce. (I suspect that this won't win the award for
"best group picture"...) (June 21, 2006
- Broads Fork Meadow)
July 19, 2006
- Twin Lakes - This is one of those "in the rain"
trips, but we still decided to try to find the location from which some
1913-1915 photographs were taken.
IMG03880
- Lake Mary, from what is believed to be the same vantage point as a 1915
photograph. This is the second of two hikes during which we
attempted to locate the vantage point of old photographs. (August 16,
2006 - Catherine Pass)
IMG04069
- The obligatory group picture. Because the group had largely
separated at the beaver pond, it was dark before we decided to get the
group picture, so we had to make do with the available light.
L->R: Dale, Elaine, Ron, Gordon, Clint. Another
attempt is #4071.
(September
20, 2006 - Willow Heights)
IMG04722a
- The shadow of the summit cone of Sunset Peak as cast across Heber
Valley. The contrast and brightness of this picture has been
skewed to better-show the shadow being scattered by the air, going from
the lower-left foreground out to the "shadow point" on the far side of
the valley. A more "normal" (un-enhanced) view may be seen here,
with #4723
being a zoomed-in shot of the shadow point. (July 4, 2007 -
Sunset Peak)
Sunset
Peak Pano 1
- This is a composite of 10 pictures taken from atop Sunset Peak, just
minutes before sunset. The center of the picture is approximately
toward the north-northeast.
(July 4,
2007 - Sunset Peak)
IMG04749
- Is this the future of our access to the canyons? Ron discovers
that he doesn't seem to have a "Honeycomb Fork" token... (July 11, 2007
- Honeycomb Fork)
IMG05111
- This is an experimental picture obtained by leaving the shutter open
for 10 seconds while three red and two green lasers were randomly waved
about at the subjects. L->R: Chris, Gordon, Bruce,
Mike, and Ron. Other attempts: #5112 -
Chris is assuming a "strong
man" pose. #5113
- Chris is
holding a piece of paper in front of his face. #5114 -
Clint and Dale (who had been
waving the lasers about for the earlier pictures) are now being
bombarded by everyone else. (July 8, 2007 -
Silver Fork)
IMG05129
- The obligatory group picture,
taken in front of the boiler at the Prince of Wales mine. (We
simply grabbed a piece of wire rope that had been laying on the ground.)A more "formal" picture is #5128:
L->R:
Renee,
Tim,
Achim,
Mike, Bruce, Clint, and Gordon.
(August 15,
2007 - Prince of Wales Mine)
SDIM1491-
A view across-canyon from the meadow below Willow Heights. (September 17,
2008
- Willow Heights) This is a view similar to that seen in #1511 (above)
but with obviously different lighting.
SDIM4135
- A time-exposure taken at the bottom of the switchbacks below Cecret
Lake showing the approach of part of the group - including Gordon's
distinctive green light. (September 1, 2010 - Germania
Pass)
